The 28th annual Seaside Half-Marathon is scheduled to take place on Dec. 5. The annual 13.1-mile race and 7.7-mile walk will begin and end at Wachapreague's Herbert S. Powell Memorial Park. There is a $25 registration for the half-marathon if paid before Nov. 23. It will be $30 thereafter.

and keep growing in stature -- for Sarnia's Derek Drouin. The sophomore at Indiana University was named Athletics Canada's Outstanding Junior Athlete of the Year at the organization's gala awards ceremony in Vancouver, last Saturday. Drouin was presented with the Eric E. Coy Trophy at the banquet, capping an astonishing year for the high jumping sensation.

He also beat out a couple of outstanding athletes to win the award, including another Canadian record-breaker and two-time international champ and another who set three paralympic world records   -Joel Skinner

The first annual Alumni Cross Country 5k will be held Nov. 28 at Foxfire High School. The race is for runners who competed in varsity cross country for the 11 area schools, Muskingum Valley League, Zanesville and Rosecrans. There will be a team format, with teams raising funds for their former programs.

Pan Fanaritis jokingly refers to Denison cross country runner Katie Navarre as the "metronome," a nod to her short, consistent steps that likely will make her an effective marathon runner in the future. That steady beat saw a sudden jump late in the season, however, and it did so in a highly unexpected and unconventional way. Suffering from tendonitis in her left leg, Navarre moved to the pool for workouts.

FORMER Olympic triple jump champion Jonathan Edwards, CBE, will be in South Cumbria next Friday. The 43-year-old is visiting the area in his capacity as deputy chair of the London 2012 Nations and Regions Group. Edwards – whose triple jump world record has now stood for 14 years – will speak and present prizes at the Cumbria Sports Awards, to be held at the Low Wood Hotel on the shore of Windermere (7pm start).

For the first time in school history, the Southern Oregon University cross country team will enter the national meet with a No. 1 ranking and a giant target on its collective back. That's just fine with second-year coach Brent Ericksen, but excuse him for experiencing a little pre-race angst anyway. "I'm a little worried right now," he said before the team departed for the meet in Vancouver, Wash. "To be honest, I wish we were a little healthier. So yeah, I'm a little worried.

Southwestern Michigan College is hosting the 43rd annual Turkey Trot Nov. 23 on the Roadrunner trails located on the college's Dowagiac campus. High school cross-country teams are invited to participate at no cost. Members of the community are welcome to join for a small race fee of $2 per person.

The 12th annual Turkey Trot will take place on Thanksgiving Day with a 5K race starting at 9 a.m. and a 2K race starting at 9:15 a.m. Proceeds from the race will go toward the North Colorado Medical Center's cardiac rehab program. The goal of the race is to raise money to assist patients who wouldn't otherwise be able to participate in the cardiac rehab program because of insurance or other monetary reasons, said Craig DeKraai, the supervisor of cardiac rehab at NCMC and the event organizer. Bristol City Council have announced that the date for the 2010 Bristol half-marathon will be Sunday, September 5. The organisers had the choice of either that date or September 19 and eventually plumped for the earlier option. Race director Georgette van Hoof said: "Both of these dates clashed with other events in either the national running calendar or the Bristol Festival calendar, which is why it has taken so long to agree it."
